LEVEL OF AWARENESS OF NURSES ON WOUND HEALING ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

This descriptive-quantitative study assessed the level of awareness — in terms of knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) — of registered nurses regarding wound healing assessment systems in selected public and private hospitals in Metro Manila. Using purposive sampling, 60 registered nurses were surveyed with an adopted Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices Questionnaire on Wound Cleansing. Results showed that nurses possessed a moderate level of knowledge of evidence-based wound cleansing and irrigation procedures (M = 0.42), with notable gaps in technical knowledge of irrigation pressure and equipment specifications, alongside a high level of positive attitude toward standardized, evidence-based wound care (M = 3.60). In contrast, self-reported practice was very low (M = 1.55), revealing a substantial gap between nurses' knowledge and attitudes and their actual application of standardized wound-cleansing procedures. Knowledge differed significantly according to age (F = 3.410, p = .009) and area of assignment (F = 6.381, p < .001), whereas neither attitude nor practice differed significantly across any demographic variable examined. These findings suggest that gaps in wound care competency stem less from individual deficiency than from insufficient institutional support, training, and standardized protocols. The study recommends integrating standardized wound care modules into nursing curricula and continuing professional development programs, establishing clear institutional clinical pathways, ensuring adequate staffing, and adopting structured, competency-based training to translate nurses' knowledge and favorable attitudes into consistent, evidence-based bedside practice.
