Utilization of Contextualized Story Word Problems in Mathematics 3
Abstract
This action research aims to enhance comprehension of mathematical tasks through the use of Contextualized Story Word Problems. It is used as an intervention material to enhance reading comprehension and develop critical and analytical problem-solving abilities of the Grade 3 pupils. This also addresses the competencies outlined in the curriculum guide, while at the same time, provides an instructional material which the pupils can work on and practice solving word problems. The fifteen selected grade three pupils of Mabog Elementary School have been chosen as respondents for this action research in consideration to their consent and approval from their parents. A Pre-Test and a Post-test have been given to them to determine their baseline proficiency level in the four fundamental operations. The data has been statistically treated using T-test to determine their difference. At a mean score of 5.13 and 8.73 for pre and Post-tests, respectively, the p-value of 0.000105159 reflects a highly significant difference for the pre-test and Post-test. This is lesser than the 0.05 level of significance (p≤0.05). Therefore, it is found out that the contextualized story word problems were efficient instructional materials for Mathematics 3 Yet; it is recommended that learning materials could be used as supplementary materials and worksheets on other subjects like MTB, ESP and Aral-pan. Moreover, it could be used as springboard in the presentation of lessons and can be reproduced to be utilized as mathematics enrichment activities for those pupils in the Grade 3 who needs Remediation, Reinforcement and Enhancement. Aside from that, with the help of the Public Schools District Supervisor this will be introduced to the other schools in the district during DisLAC (District Learning Action Cell) session.
