CREATION OF PEBASA CHART: A NOVEL FILIPINO CHART FOR NEAR VISUAL ACUITY ASSESSMENT
Keywords:
near visual acuity chart, crowding effect, visual acuity assessment, optotypes, Filipino accessibilityAbstract
Near Visual Acuity (NVA) assessment plays a crucial role in detecting and managing visual impairments. However, existing tools such as the Reduced Snellen Chart and Jaeger Chart present limitations, as they do not account for the crowding phenomenon and language barriers. This study aimed to develop, validate, and standardize the PEBASA Chart, a near visual acuity tool designed to incorporate crowding effects, standardized optotypes, and cultural and linguistic relevance for improved accessibility among Filipinos. The study involved respondents from a college population at the Centro Escolar University (CEU) School of Environmental and Allied Sciences (SELAMS) and from a local community in Landayan, San Pedro, Laguna. Statistical analysis demonstrated a strong correlation between the PEBASA Chart and the Reduced Snellen Chart, with a Pearson Chi-square value of 166.727, a Cramer's V value of 0.871, and a p-value of .000, further confirming strong agreement between the two charts. These results support the reliability and effectiveness of the PEBASA Chart in assessing near visual acuity across different literacy levels.
